Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) provides power to 25 communities across Nunavut to a variety of customers. Customers pay different rates depending on the type of customer they are.
The rates below are effective as of October 1, 2023.
Non-Government Residential (Domestic) Customers – 67.33 cents/kWh
Non-Government Residential rates apply to residential customers who are not living in a public housing unit. These customers are entitled to receive a subsidy of 700 kWh for each 30-day period from April 1 to September 30 and 1000 kWh for each 30-day period from October 1 to March 31. Any consumption that exceeds the subsidy threshold is billed at a Residential Non-Government rate at full cost.
NOTE: Customers are only eligible for this subsidy for one residence. If you have more than one power account, only one is subsidized.
Non-Government Commercial Customers – 55.54 cents/kWh
Non-Government Commercial rates apply to non-governmental commercial customers or business accounts. This also includes any mechanical rooms for multiple units or dwellings and temporary service connections during construction of a unit or building. Customers are billed for their actual meter usage for the month, as well as a base/demand charge.
Note: At QEC’s sole discretion, the corporation may install a demand meter on all commercial services.
Government Residential (Domestic) Customers – 102.21 cents/kWh
Government Residential rates apply to residential customers who live in a government owned public housing unit. The tenant is billed directly for 6 cents/kWh and the government is billed the remaining amounts owed (which includes a base charge and metered usage at the Government Residential Rates). When the public housing unit is not occupied the government is billed the full rate.
Government Commercial Customers – 95.18 cents/kWh
Government Commercial rates apply to commercial government accounts or government offices. Customers are billed for their actual meter usage for the month, as well as a base/demand charge.
Note: At QEC’s sole discretion, the corporation may install a demand meter on all commercial services.
Municipal Tax-Based Customer (Residential/Domestic - 67.33 cents/kWh & Commercial - 55.54 cents/kWh)
Municipal Tax-Based Customer rates apply to Municipalities that obtains most of its operating costs through community tax revenue. Customers are billed for their actual meter usage for the month, as well as a base charge. Municipalities being reclassified to Municipal Tax-Based Customer must be approved through a regulatory application to the Minister responsible for QEC.
Streetlight Rate
Streetlights are not metered and there is a flat monthly fee per streetlight. The rates differ by community and by the type of street light.
