Demolition of QEC property due to fire damage in Iqaluit

Submitted by sglaeske on

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) would like to inform Nunavummiut about the demolition of QEC property from May 16 to 18, 2018, in the downtown area of Iqaluit. The affected area is highlighted in the map below.

A fire caused extensive damage to a QEC owned storage unit and the remaining structure will be demolished over a two-day period. While safety personnel will be on the site during the demolition, community members are asked to exercise caution around the area where work is being done.

On May 14, 2018, emergency services quickly responded to a fire on QEC property at approximately 5:00 p.m. QEC staff and line crews were on site to disconnect power to the inflamed structure and neighbouring buildings. The fire was contained by approximately 5:30 p.m. No injuries were sustained as a result of the fire. The cause is currently being investigated by the City of Iqaluit’s Fire Department.

QEC would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause the community at this time.
