The incident was discovered at 2 a.m. on March 16, 2018, and immediate environmental remediation measures were conducted. Approximately 1000 litres of fuel spilled inside the power plant from a storage tank and spread outside through the power plant door. The cause of the spill is currently being investigated.
QEC staff were onsite conducting maintenance when the incident occurred and were able to contain the spill. The Corporation’s environmental specialist and Nunatta Environmental Services Inc. have flown to Grise Fiord with additional spill response supplies to continue remediation efforts. QEC staff are also working closely with the community to resolve the issue.
The Corporation is currently constructing a new power plant in Grise Fiord. The fuel spill occurred at the old power plant site. While safety personnel will be on the site during the environmental remediation process, community members are asked to exercise caution around the area where work is being done.
QEC is dedicated to preserving the environment and employs qualified specialists who ensure leading environmental industry practices are followed in accordance with territorial and federal standards.
