QULLIQ ENERGY CORPORATION Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory’s communities. QEC-20-036 Environmental Specialist - Intern Based out of Iqaluit, Nunavut and reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety, and Environment, the Environmental Specialist Intern is a three-year-term position created in partnership with Qulliq Energy Corporation and the Government of Nunavut. The position works in a developmental capacity with the Environmental Specialist to ensure that the Corporation operates within municipal, territorial, and national environmental standards. The intern will learn how to conduct site inspections, respond to environmental incidents, and coordinate remediation efforts where incidents occur. The intern will learn how to interpret and apply the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Nunavut Storage Tank Systems for Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products Regulation, Nunavut Environmental Protection Act, and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Duties and Responsibilities: • Assists Environmental Specialist in conducting annual environmental site inspections of power plants, tanks, pipelines, or other similar infrastructure. • Interpret and apply national, territorial, and municipal environmental compliance standards and related regulations under the guidance of the Environmental Specialist. • Supports the Environmental Specialist with environmental projects such as waste removal, site assessments, site delineations, site cleanups, risk assessments, and annual soil sampling. • Assists the Environmental Specialist in the planning of capital projects and the decommissioning of power plants, tanks, pipelines, or other similar infrastructure that has exceeded its useful life. • Works with the Environmental Specialist and local Government to develop emergency response in event of environmental contamination. • Helps the Environmental Specialist conduct research and prepares reports and procedures for various environmental issues the corporation must consider during operations. • Assists the Environmental Specialist in presenting environment concerns and updates to regulations during the annual operator-training program. Required Qualifications Include: • Post-secondary diploma in Environmental Technology • Class 5 driver’s licence, including ability to meet insurance requirements. Assets: • Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language and culture. • The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French. Equivalencies consisting of a combination of related education and experience may be considered. We offer a competitive starting salary range of $79,278, a northern living allowance of $15,016 per annum, eligibility for overtime, a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit pension program and subsidized staff housing.
