QEC 22-018 Health, Safety, and Environmental Advisor

 

Iqaluit

 

Based out of Iqaluit, Nunavut and reporting to the Manager, Health Safety, and Environment, the Health, Safety, and Environmental Advisor is responsible for ensuring that all plant utilities operate responsibly and in compliance with all corporate environmental guidelines and meets all applicable Federal and Territorial Acts and Regulations. The position is also responsible for participating in annual site inspections, coordinating emergency response efforts, investigating incidents, developing and facilitating programs, reporting health, safety, and environmental incidents to the proper authorities, and promoting a strong culture of compliance by ensuring all stakeholders operate in an ethical and legally appropriate manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides support to territorial and regional management and staff in interpreting and applying Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation, regulations, codes, and practices.
  • Assists in environmental projects such as waste removal, site assessments, site delineations, site cleanups, risk assessments, and annual soil sampling.
  • Establishes and maintains written health, safety, and environmental compliance standards, QEC's Health and Safety Manual, Corporate Safety Rule Book, and Environmental Management System.
  • Develops and delivers in-house health, safety, and environmental training courses such as first aid, Fall Protection, spill response, TDG and WHMIS to internal and external stakeholders, as required.
  • Conducting root cause analysis for health, safety, and environmental incidents to prevent future occurrences.
  • Maintain an updated database of current training records and observed hazards to ensure compliance with regulated training requirements.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies on land acquisition, spill response, serious incidents, dangerous occurrences, and other matters related to the prevention of health, safety, and environmental issues.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Technology, or related discipline.
  • Three years of experience in organizing and managing health, safety, and environmental programs.

Assets:

  • Professional designation such as an Environmental Professional (EP), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Healthy Safety Consultant (CHSC), or National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) are considered assets.
  • Experience working in a utility is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language and culture.
  • The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French.

Equivalencies:

  • Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position.

 

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $99,684.00 to $126,126.00 a northern living allowance of $15,016.00 per annum, a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit pension program and subsided staff housing. This position is included in the Nunavut Employees Union.

 

Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
