Qulliq Energy Corporation

 

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory’s communities.

 

Manager, Mechanical Engineering (QEC-24-013)

Iqaluit, Nunavut

Reporting to the Director, Engineering, The Manager, Mechanical Engineering is responsible for providing mechanical engineering expertise to capital projects and overseeing the project budgets, adherence to corporate policies and procedures, and the ongoing operation and administration of the mechanical engineering division.

The position research, develops, and implements mechanical policies and procedures in compliance with, applicable technical standards and regulatory requirements, including but not limited to Canadian Standards Association (CSA), National Fire Code (NFC), National Building Code (NBC) standards, and internal financial, purchasing, and human resources policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and directs all aspects of mechanical engineering activities within the organization.
  • Ensures all engineering projects, initiatives, and processes are compliant with corporate policies and objectives.
  • Performs technical reviews and provides quality assurance, with respect to applicable codes, standards and design accuracy on mechanical designs and specifications.
  • Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the mechanical engineering division.
  • Provides technical support and Mechanical design reviews for projects in the Engineering and Operations departments.
  • Writes technical specifications for mechanical equipment such as genset, heat exchanges, radiator, HVAC system for sourcing by procurement. Provides on-site recommendations and solutions in situations which warrant re-design or modifications.

Required Qualifications Include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P. Eng), with immediate eligibility for registration with NAPEG.
  • Seven years of experience managing capital projects.
  • Two years of experience in the supervision and development of staff.
  • Experience in diesel-generated power generation.

Assets:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
  • Experience in full scope project management, from inception to commissioning an asset.
  • Experience in a regulated environment is an asset.
  • Experience in a utility environment is an asset.

A combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $133,155.90 to $160,177.60 and a northern living allowance of $16,008.00 per annum. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined-benefit pension program. In addition, subsidized staff housing is available for this position. This position is not included in the Nunavut Employee’s Union.

Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
