IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 11, 2020) – The new Arctic Bay power plant project has been approved by the Honourable Jeannie Ehaloak, Minister responsible for Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC). An application for a major project permit was submitted in November 2019.
“Upon review of QEC’s application and through consultation with the Utility Rates Review Council, I am pleased to approve the replacement project request,” said the Honourable Jeannie Ehaloak, Minister responsible for QEC. “I am confident that the Corporation can lead major projects while responsibly managing revenue from customers and prioritizing value for their money.”
QEC anticipates construction of the new power plant will take place from 2020 to 2023 and has applied for funding from the federal government’s Arctic Energy Fund to help cover construction costs.
“Our efforts are focused on delivering safe, reliable, affordable energy to our customers by replacing infrastructure that has exceeded its intended life span,” said Bruno Pereira, QEC’s President and CEO. “With continued funding support from the federal government, we will ensure that Nunavut’s community energy needs are met.”
