Qulliq Energy Corporation
Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory’s communities.
QEC-20 – 017 Plant Superintendent
(This competition is restricted to Nunavut Inuit applicants only)
Located in Kugluktuk, Nunavut, the Plant Superintendent is responsible for maintaining safe and continuous power generation and distribution, as well as the maintenance requirements of all mechanical and electrical equipment. This position is also responsible for operating and monitoring the diesel power plant and associated systems to provide safe, reliable electrical service to QEC’s customers in the community in a cost effective manner.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Acts as the first point of contact for customers: including receiving customer orders for new service, disconnections and changes of ownership, responding to customer complaints and inquiries, accepting payments, and initiating collection procedures for the Corporation while maintaining good working relationships with the community and local business representatives.
- Operates the plant ensuring efficient use of all equipment.
- Assists with inspection, small repairs, minor preventative maintenance and verification of line and metering equipment.
- Requests repair and/or replacement or emergency repairs as required.
- Gathers and reports on meter data, providing associated documentation to the area accounts department.
- Provides information to the Production Supervisor for preparation and submission of budget, variances and other performance measurements.
- Manages plant inventories including shipping, receiving and monitoring.
- Standby work is a requirement of the position to conduct plant checks as required (evenings and weekends) to ensure there are no issues which require immediate attention.
Required Qualifications Include:
- Certification as a Power Systems Engineer (Fourth Class), or interprovincial certification as an Electrician, Heavy Equipment Technician, or Powerline Technician.
- Experience in the production and distribution of power.
- Valid Class 5 drivers’ license and satisfactory drivers abstract.
Assets:
- Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language and culture.
- The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
We offer a competitive starting salary range of $99,486 to $116,209 a northern living allowance of $22,042 per annum, eligibility for overtime, and a comprehensive benefits package including a defined benefit and pension program. This position is included in the Nunavut Employees Union.
