Power pole safety

Submitted by sglaeske on

With local elections underway, Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) would like to remind Nunavummiut to avoid attaching posters or notices to power poles. Posters on power poles impedes climbing space, and the staples or tacks that are left on the pole are a safety concern for technical crews.

QEC also asks Nunavummiut continue to exercise caution around power poles throughout the winter season. Please remember the following to avoid unplanned power outages, severe injury, or death:

  • Remember to keep a minimum distance of three meters from power lines.
  • Equipment supporting power poles like guy wires or cribs may be covered in snow. Keep a safe driving distance away from the base of power poles. To alert motorists, QEC has installed bright colored coverings on guy wires in high traffic areas.
  • Do not push snow toward base of power poles or create high snow piles near overhead power lines. If a person or motorist encounters a power line, it can cause severe injury or death.
  • Use a spotter when operating powered mobile equipment and a view of the path is not clear. This is a requirement for Nunavut workers under the territory’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations found online here: www.wscc.nu.ca.

QEC would like to thank Nunavummiut for their continued cooperation in using safe practices around power poles and power lines.
