IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 22, 2017) – Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is pleased to have awarded the 2017 Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier Scholarship to a promising Nunavut student. Launched in 2001, the $5,000 award is presented annually to a student pursuing a post-secondary education.
Art Sateana of Rankin Inlet is this year’s recipient of QEC’s scholarship based on his academic excellence and outstanding community involvement. Art is currently enrolled in the Health Careers Access Program at the University of Manitoba, an important step towards realizing his goal of becoming a general physician in Nunavut.
“I am pleased that QEC is able to financially contribute to Art’s academic journey,” said the Honourable Johnny Mike, Minister responsible for QEC. “It is without hesitation that Art’s generous spirit and willingness to give back to the community honours the government leader in which the long standing scholarship is named.”
Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier was an advocate who recognized the importance of a locally owned and operated utility. The scholarship pays tribute to her contribution in establishing an independent energy corporation for Nunavut before her sudden passing in 2000.
“QEC would like to express gratitude to Ms. Gauthier’s family members, Stephane and Amanda Kilabuk, for their continued commitment in helping QEC select an exceptional student,” said President and Chief Executive Officer, Bruno Pereira.
