IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 16, 2018) – Qulliq Energy Corporation’s (QEC) major project permit application to build a replacement power plant in Kugluktuk has been approved by the Minister Responsible for QEC.

“While the existing power plant has delivered safe and reliable electricity to the community for nearly 50 years, it is now at the end of its service life and must be replaced,” said the Honourable Jeannie Ehaloak, Minister Responsible for QEC. “The replacement power plant will be constructed with provisions to allow the connection of alternative energy projects, enabling the territory’s move away from diesel.”

Estimated to cost $31.4 million, the major capital project is expected to begin in 2019 with an anticipated completion date of 2021. The new power plant will be built with newer fuel efficient generator sets that will reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution.

“It is crucial that QEC continues the power plant rebuild program to ensure the delivery of safe and reliable power to Nunavummiut,” said Bruno Pereira, President and CEO of QEC. “In line with the corporation’s vision to introduce a cleaner electricity supply, we have prioritized renewable energy system integration capabilities in all of our new power plant replacement projects.”
