IQALUIT, Nunavut (August 9, 2017) – Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) has submitted a Major Project Permit Application (MPPA) to the Honourable Johnny Mike, Minister responsible for QEC, requesting approval to build a replacement power plant in Kugluktuk.

The proposed project includes new fuel efficient generator sets and updated technologies to help reduce emissions and noise pollution. Kugluktuk’s new power infrastructure is estimated to cost $31.4 million which includes the construction of new power distribution lines within the community. In keeping with QEC’s vision of a clean electricity supply, the project also allows for the integration of renewable energy systems to the power grid.

“Rebuilding Nunavut’s power infrastructure is the corporation’s top priority to ensure a safe, reliable, and affordable power supply, to meet the territory’s growing electricity demand and support its continued economic development,” said the Honourable Johnny Mike, Minister responsible for QEC. “I will make my decision once I have reviewed QEC’s application and consulted with the Utility Rates Review Council.”
