IQALUIT, Nunavut (April 3, 2017) –Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) officials joined local dignitaries and community members today to celebrate the successful commissioning of the new Pangnirtung power plant. The original power plant, which was built in 1971, was destroyed by fire in April 2015.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the residents of Pangnirtung for their immense support and patience while QEC built a replacement plant from the ground up,” said the Honourable Johnny Mike, Minister responsible for QEC. “I’m very pleased that the community now has a secure and reliable source of electricity which is essential to Pangnirtung’s development and well-being.”
The new power plant is equipped with three new fuel efficient generator sets with an increased capacity of 3.75 megawatts of power. Along with an upgraded fire suppression system and an automated alarm system, the new plant also features the latest technology to minimize sound pollution and to reduce exhaust emissions.
“Delivering this project on time and under budget was one of our priorities this year. I’m pleased that we were able to achieve this goal,” said Bruno Pereira, President and Chief Executive Officer of QEC.
Pangnirtung’s new power plant is QEC’s third major project to be completed in the past year, all of which allow the integration of renewable energy systems.
