IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 14, 2017) – Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) has completed the construction and testing of the new Qikiqtarjuaq power plant. The new power plant is the second major project recently completed by QEC. In November 2016, QEC announced the operation of a new power plant for the community of Taloyoak.
“I’m very pleased to announce the success of both QEC’s capital projects. This critical infrastructure is key to the continued economic development of Qikiqtarjuaq and Nunavut,” said the Honourable Johnny Mike, Minister responsible for QEC.
The new power plant is equipped with four new fuel efficient generator sets capable of supplying up to 1.8 megawatts of power. Designed to provide reliable power for 40 plus years, the new plant also features a hospital-grade silencer to minimize sound pollution, and will accommodate renewable energy systems.
“Rebuilding our power infrastructure to ensure that Nunavummiut have reliable electricity is our top priority. Completing Qikiqtarjuaq’s plant is one of our key targets this year, and I would like to commend the QEC team for achieving another corporate milestone,” said Bruno Pereira, President and Chief Executive Officer of QEC.
QEC plans to mark the official opening of the new power plant with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community feast at the Qikiqtarjuaq community hall.
