Environmental remediation of fuel spill in Grise Fiord

Submitted by sglaeske on

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) would like to update Nunavummiut on the environmental remediation of a fuel spill that occurred at the Grise Fiord power plant on March 16, 2018.

QEC staff and specialists from Nunatta Environmental Services have officially completed immediate remediation of the land surrounding the power plant that was impacted by the fuel spill. Due to the low volume of contaminated soil, QEC is storing the contaminants in high grade storage bags to be shipped out of the community on the sealift this summer. Further remediation and disposal of the contaminants will take place at a certified disposal facility in the south.

It is estimated that 4000 litres of fuel was spilled during this incident. QEC has determined the cause of the spill was primarily a result of failed power plant components. Enhanced monitoring and quality assurance measures have been put in place to minimize the risk of future occurrences.

QEC would like to thank the hamlet for their contributions in the remediation process through site monitoring, barricading, direct clean-up efforts and allowing QEC the use of hamlet equipment. The Corporation would also like to thank the residents of Grise Fiord for their cooperation while the spill area was remediated.
